General Information About Taiwan

1. AIRPORTS

Taiwan has 2 international airports; one in the north, the other in the south. Its northern airport, Taoyuan International Airport (TTIA),
24 miles from Taipei, is the main airport for international flights. Formerly known as Chiang Kai-shek International Airport it has two international passenger terminals. Kaohsiung International Airport in the south has two passenger terminals serving international and domestic flights.

The Songshan Airport and the Taichung Airport offer international charter flights and cross-strait flight service. Taiwan also has several domestic airports.

Domestic Airports

Taiwan has 16 domestic airports. Eight are located on the Taiwan mainland; in Taipei (Songshan), Pingtung, Hualien and Taitung cities, in Taichung and Chiayi counties and in Hengchun Township. Three are located on the Penghu Islands, two on the Matsu Islands and one each on Orchid Island, Green Island, and Kinmen Island.

Airlines

Taiwan’s carriers China Airlines and Eva Air have daily flights to Taiwan from North America, Europe, Oceania, and most of Asia.

China Air flies to Taiwan from New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver, Canada.

Eva Airlines offers flights to Taiwan’s International Airport from U.S. cities including Newark, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. It has opened a Diamond VIP lounge at the Taoyuan International Airport.

Around 40 international airlines fly to Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport including American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, Cathay Pacific, KLM, and British Air among others.

Mandarin is the National language. Other spoken languages are Taiwanese, Hakka, indigenous languages, Japanese, and English.

The Taiwanese currency is the NT (New Taiwan Dollar). Currently, the rate of exchange is approximately 29NT to $1 US Dollar.

9. GROUND TRANSPORTATION

Trains

Taipei Main Station - services are available to all major cities. The Northern line goes north to such cities as Keelung. The Western line goes to Taichung and also south to Kaohsiung. The Eastern line goes to Hualien. Taiwan High Speed Rail services also depart from this station.

Buses
Taipei's main bus station is the Taipei Inter City Bus Terminal located on the corner of Yanping Rd. and Civic Boulevard not far from the Main Train Station. Next door is the smaller East Bus Station with frequent service to Taoyuan International Airport and Keelung.
